Super Bowl Party Ideas

I have to be honest: I am NOT a huge football fan (or any sport for that matter). However, I'll find any excuse to throw a good party, and Super Bowl Sunday is definitely one of those excuses! It's the perfect opportunity to call up a few of your closest friends and family, pig out on ~~the most unhealthy~~ some great food, and enjoy your sunday afternoon...winning!!!

Well, this Sunday (Feb. 5) just happens to be Super Bowl XLVI (46), with the New England Patriots vs. New York Giants at Lucas Oil Stadium at 630pm ET on NBC (Confession: I had to google that info...did I mention I was NOT a sports fan?!)

Even though the game is in just a few days, you still have time to whip together a great party...I mean, it's football for goodness sakes, it doesn't have to be fancy-schmancy...Beer, Appetizers, and men in tight uniforms...ahem, I meant two great teams battling it out on the field (*giggling*)!

I've rounded up a few tips and ideas to help you put together a Game Day get-together in no time!

Food:

When it comes to the food on your game day menu, the best advice would be to Keep. It. Simple. Finger foods and appetizers are the best way to go. No need to break out the fancy china or the good silverware. Provide a few different options for your guests to mix and match...

Dessert Wars: Are Macaroons the New Cupcake?!

We've spotted a new dessert trend on the party horizon...and it's waging a war on cupcakes!

Macaroons are the new rage! It seems you can't find a dessert table without them!!!

But, just what are they...you may ask?

Originating from the French word Macaron, macaroons are meringue cookies filled with a buttercream filling. They can best be described as a cookie that is crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside.

Mmmmm!!! I haven't personally tried one yet, but they look delish, don't they?!

Pop quiz time!!! (Well, not exactly...but play along, ok?!)

Now that you've got the low-down on the new party craze, I figured you might want to whip up a batch for your next party (or for yourself...hey, we're not here to judge)!

I found this recipe here. There's also a sweet tutorial on Bakerella that shows you how to make the Macaroon pops (pictured above)

Ready...set...get to baking!!!

Ingredients

Makes about 16 filled macaroons

1 1/4 cups plus 1 teaspoon confectioners’ sugar
1 cup (4 ounces) finely ground sliced, blanched almonds
6 tablespoons fresh egg whites (from about 3 extra-large eggs)
Pinch of salt
1/4 cup granulated sugar

Directions

To make the macaroons: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a medium bowl, whisk together confectioners’ sugar and ground almonds. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, whip egg whites with salt on medium speed until foamy. Increase speed to high and gradually add granulated sugar. Continue to whip until stiff glossy peaks form. With a rubber spatula, gently fold in the confectioners’ sugar mixture until completely incorporated.
Line baking sheets with parchment paper; set aside. Fit a pastry bag with a 3/8-inch #4 round tip, and fill with batter. Pipe 1-inch disks onto prepared baking sheets, leaving 2 inches between cookies. The batter will spread a little. Let stand at room temperature until dry, and a soft skin forms on the tops of the macaroons and the shiny surface turns dull, about 15 minutes.
Bake, with the door of the oven slightly ajar, until the surface of the macaroons is completely dry, about 15 minutes. Remove baking sheet to a wire rack and let the macaroons cool completely on the baking sheet. Gently peel off the parchment. Their tops are easily crushed, so take care when removing the macaroons from the parchment. Use immediately or store in an airtight container, refrigerated for up to 2 days or frozen for up to 1 month.
To fill the macaroons: Fill a pastry bag with the filling. Turn macaroons so their flat bottoms face up. On half of them, pipe about 1 teaspoon filling. Sandwich these with the remaining macaroons, flat-side down, pressing slightly to spread the filling to the edges. Refrigerate until firm, about 1 hour.

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature, cut into pieces

Directions

In the bowl of an electric mixer, whisk egg whites and sugar. Set mixer bowl over a saucepan of simmering water and heat mixture, whisking often, until it feels warm to the touch and sugar is dissolved, 3 to 5 minutes.
Transfer bowl to the mixer, and fit with the whisk attachment. Whip on high speed until mixture is stiff and shiny, 3 to 5 minutes. Add butter, one piece at a time, and continue mixing until butter is thoroughly incorporated. The filling can be kept, covered and refrigerated, up to 1 week. Bring to room temperature before stirring.

I don't know about you, but I am happy that today marks the official first day of Fall! I love this time of year because it means my three favorite holidays (Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas) are fast approaching. I love to entertain, and this is when I feel I can get most creative.

Now that i've fallen in love with baking, I'm always on the search for new recipes to add to my collection. This year, I would like to add a new, yummy dessert to our holiday dinner menu...something other than the usual Sweet Potato Pie and Banana Pudding.

Thanks to Better Homes and Gardens magazine's 31 Fall-Spiced Desserts, I think I have quite a few contenders:

Happy Monday everyone! I hope you had a wonderful weekend!

I've been entertaining the idea of doing a V-Log (video blog) for quite awhile now, but I never got around to it...mainly because (gasp!) I'm a little bit camera shy! But, I have so many things that I've been wanting to share and a regular ol' blog post just won't do sometimes, lol!

Please excuse the fact that the video is a little off center (hey, cut me some slack...it's my first time for goodness sakes lol...but I promise, it's going to get better :). I just wanted to take a moment to personally introduce myself to my readers...you know, so you can put a face/voice to the name.

So, without further ado...check out my very first V-Log post...

In future V-log entries, I will be answering all of your burning wedding/event planning questions and even providing a few how-to/DIY videos. I'm very excited about this new aspect of the blog, and I hope you enjoy the content that I am working hard to bring you.

Well, Isn't That PINTERESTING!!!

So I finally did it. I really put up a good fight, but in the end I lost the battle. Believe me when I say I tried oh so very hard, but I broke down. I became a part of the masses and (wait for it!!!) signed up for PINTEREST!!!

You see, I am addicted to all things pretty and creative. For this reason, I subscribe to several different blogs to get my daily "fix". It is also the reason I started this blog...to share all of the creative things I come across in the wedding and party planning world.

So, why am I making a big deal out of the fact that I joined PINTEREST?!?! Well, because I now have a new obsession. After browsing around for the very first time, I knew instantly that this would be a place that I could spend countless hours ooohhhhing and ahhhhing over all of the stunning imagery that has been pinned.

Now, this could be a totally GOOD thing (it is definitely the new go-to place for creative inspiration), or it can be a bad, bad thing (I have a tendency to get sidetracked when it comes to looking at the creations of such talented party professionals).

Sigh.

Wow, this week went by incredibly fast! Anyone have any exciting weddings or events lined up for the weekend?

I just wanted to take a moment to share the Fall/Winter 2011 cover of Munaluchi Bride Magazine, featuring the incomparable event designer, Mr. Preston Bailey! His work is truly Ah-mazing, and once again, he doesn't fail to impress!
For this issue, Preston created a dress out of something he knows best: flowers of course! Over 1,000 flowers were used to make this one of a kind floral dress: 250 white phalaenopsis orchids, 400 white hydrangeas, 300 white tibet roses, and 100 pink rosita vendela roses.

Could you even imagine wearing a floral creation like this?! O...M...G!!!

Samoa Cupcakes {Recipe}

Recently, my co-worker asked me to make cupcakes for her birthday. I knew she was in love with the Starbucks Mocha Coconut Frappucino, and she wanted something with a similar taste. So, I did a little research and came across the recipe for a Samoa cupcake (you know, like the popular Samoa girl scout cookie). When I mentioned it to her, she was excited...the flavors were exactly what she had in mind. In my usual style, I decided I wanted to add a little twist to the recipe, so I tweaked it just a little bit, and this is what I came up with:

Samoa Cupcakes (Chocolate Coconut Cupcakes with Caramel Buttercream)
Slightly Adapted from: Sweet Little Details

Chocolate Coconut Cupcakes:
2 cups flour

3/4 cup natural cocoa powder

1 1/2 sticks butter, room temperature

1 3/4 cups sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1/2 cup Malibu Rum
4 large eggs, room temperature

1 cups milk

Caramel Frosting:

2 sticks unsalted butter

1/2 teaspoon salt

3/4 cups packed brown sugar

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1/3 cup prepared caramel (recipe below)

3 Tablespoons milk

6 cups powdered sugar

1/2 cup Malibu Rum

1 cup sweetened shredded coconut

1/4 cup milk chocolate chips

Caramel recipe: found via Chockylit
1/4 cup water

1 cup sugar

2 tablespoons light corn syrup

1/2 cup heavy cream

1 tablespoon butter

Cupcake Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350 F. Line muffin pan with paper liners.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour and cocoa powder .In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream together the butter, sugar, salt, baking soda, vanilla, and Rum until fluffy and light, at least 3-4 minutes. Add eggs, one at a time, beating until each is incorporated, scraping down sides of bowl as needed. With mixer on low speed add in the dry ingredients in three batches, alternating with the milk beating just until combined.

Fill cupcake liners 1/2 full, making sure that the batter is divided evenly. Bake, rotating tins halfway through, until a toothpick inserted in centers comes out clean, 20-22 minutes. Tilt each cupcake in the muffin pan so it sits at an angle. Allow the cupcakes to cool in the pan at this angle for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Frosting Instructions:

Cream butter and brown sugar together in the bowl of an electric or stand mixer. Add vanilla, salt, caramel syrup, milk until combine. Begin adding in the sugar slowly and mixing thoroughly after each addition. Beat for about 4 minutes until smooth. Add Malibu Rum and mix until incorporated.
To toast the coconut, spread the coconut onto a rimmed sheet pan. Toast in a 350°F oven, stirring frequently, until the coconut is an even brown color, about 10 minutes.

Transfer the frosting to a pastry bag fitted with a decorative tip. Pipe a spiral of frosting, beginning at the outer edge and working inward.
Heat chocolate chips in a double boiler or microwave for about 30 seconds or until drizzling consistency. Garnish the frosted cupcakes with toasted coconut and drizzle with melted chocolate.

My co-worker absolutely L-O-V-E-D them (as did the rest of the people in my office)! Although I'm not a big coconut fan (I made a few without it), I have to admit they were delicious and I can def see myself making these again in the near future!

I don't know about you, but I feel like summer went by SUPER fast! I mean, it's almost like I blinked and we were smack-dab in the middle of August!!! Well, you know what that means: it's almost time for the kiddos to head back to school! My little ones haven't made it to school age yet, but I can only imagine the hustle and bustle that comes along with preparing for a new school year. So, why not throw a Back to School shindig to get yourself and the kids all fired up for the ~~chaos~~ fun that starting school brings.

Helllloooo out there in Blogger land!!! I have some really exciting news to share! But first, let me start off by apologizing for the lack of posts. I have been a bad, bad blogger, but I promise its for a good reason. I've been super busy working a major new project: DRUMROLL PLEASE!!!: I am now one half of a fabulous baking duo, and my partner and I have just formed Oh, Goodness! Desserts. Cake Alternatives: Part II

In yesterday's post, I was so hyped about the cake "push-pop" shooters since they are such a fresh, new alternative to the traditional cake. However, there are so many other fun and unique alternatives if you're looking to give your guests a little something different:

Who doesn't love pie?! Make sure to have a variety of flavors for guests to choose from...

Donuts are such a fun idea. I've seen a lot of these babies popping up on party tables lately!

If your budget allows, you could serve individual mini-cakes. These are so elegant and chic...

I love the idea behind Trash the Dress photo sessions. These after-the-wedding shoots give the bride (and sometimes the groom) the chance to get down and well, dirty (for lack of a better word)! During the wedding, you'll have the opportunity to take the more traditional, posed photographs. Trash the Dress photos tend to be more unique and personalized to the individual or couple. They can be soft and romantic or downright funky. The whole idea is to show your wild and creative side.

This afternoon, I had the opportunity to attend the BrideWorld Expo at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Redondo Beach. I met some great vendors and am looking forward to meeting each and everyone of them! Check out a few of the pics I managed to snap as I squeezed down the aisles of excited brides and grooms to be:

I thought these shoes (at the Believe Fitness Studio booth) were gorgeously sexy. The pic just doesn't do them justice...

These designer caramel apples (at the Apple Revolution booth) looked amazing! They would make an awesome favor for guests to take home...

Advantage Bridal's booth: they sell "everything but the dress"!

Bridal shows can be a great source of information and inspiration when planning your wedding. One of the greatest advantages is that you are able to meet a ton of vendors in one setting, without having to travel to endless appointments. You can have a "mini-meeting" with the vendors whose work has caught your attention, then arrange a more formal meeting to get more information if needed and book their services. It can definitely be an afternoon well spent if you choose the right show.

Some of the bigger shows can get a little overwhelming, so here are a few tips to help you survive your bridal show experience:

Wear comfy shoes: You'll be doing a lot of walking, so comfort is a must.
Come prepared: Some shows offer printed labels with your name, address, phone #, and email address, if you register ahead of time. This will save you a lot of time and frustration from having to fill out the same information for vendor after vendor. If this is not offered, or you're unable to sign-up in advance, take the time to print the labels yourself. You'll be so glad you did!
Bring a camera: You may see something you MUST have for your wedding and you'll want a picture so that you don't forget or can show the vendor exactly what you are referring to when you make an appointment. Not to mention, there will be a ton of info thrown your way. You'll want to make notes take pictures of the booths that stand out to you so they'll be easy to remember.
Do your homework: Research some of the vendors that will be exhibiting. This way, you'll be familiar with what they have to offer. Many vendors offer some great day-of-show discounts. If you know about the company ahead of time, you'll feel more comfortable if you decide to book on the spot.
Grab a partner: Your fiance would be the best choice to bring along for obvious reasons, but if he/she is unavailable, grab a trusted confidante (best friend, parents, etc) to bounce ideas bounce ideas with.
Have an open mind: Although you may have ideas in your mind of how you'd like your wedding, keep an open mind to all of the choices out there.
Relax and enjoy the show: Don't feel pressured to commit to anything. If you are not ready to book on the spot make sure that is communicated. Also, take the time to enjoy some of the yummy food, desserts, swag bags and fashion shows, etc. They are all there to make the most of your experience.

Day 5: Vera Wang is in the Building!

A few months back, I wrote a post giving you a sneak peek at the new White by Vera Wang line coming to David's Bridals stores. Well, Vera is officially in the building!

Vera Wang is known worldwide for her couture wedding gowns. Now, the famous designer has created a more affordable line, ranging n price from $600-$1400. The 12-dress Spring collection was released last Friday, and also includes headpices, veils, and sashes. There are also plans in the works to unleash a new collection in a few months that will include shoes, bridesmaids dresses, and select gowns that go up to size 26 (currently, the gowns run through size 14).

This is HUGE news for the bridal world! Now, more brides can afford to give their look a "platinum touch" with the help of "White" by Vera Wang. Check out more of the collection here.

Hello out there! Did you miss me?! My poor blog has been neglected lately and I feel awful. When I started this blog, my goal was to post 3-4 times per week, but because of my busy schedule, that goal has fallen somewhere by the wayside. Real Parties: Dora Fiesta 3rd Birthday

A couple of weekends ago, I had the pleasure of putting together a Dora Fiesta 3rd Birthday Party for the most adorable twin girls in the world (ok, I may be a little biased because they're MY twins girls, but they are beautiful nonetheless). For weeks as I planned the party I had one major concern: the weather! For the past two years, the weather has been terrible on the twins' birthday: the first year it was raining, the second year it was SUPER windy. I had some awesome entertainment lined up, so the last thing I needed was for mother nature to rain on our parade, literally!

But the weather was great! It was bright and sunny...the perfect day for a party! So, party is what we did. The theme was "A Dora Fiesta", and the kids (and adults) had a great time feasting on Mexican food (ceviche, enchiladas, beans, and spanish rice), jumping in the bounce house, and riding the party train. There was even a special surprise appearance by Dora.

and Dora herself made an appearance...

But the ultimate highlight of the party was, hands-down, the Trackless Party Train!!!

I had a chance to ride on the train and I think I may have had a little more fun than the kids!

My twin daughters, Aaliya & Alexis love Dora the Explorer. So, it was really a no-brainer when it was time to decide on a theme for their 3rd birthday party: a Dora Fiesta!!! I am so excited because I have some really great ideas for the party and I've been working on some really fun and cute DIY projects. As usual, i'm really anxious to see how everything comes together. I only have one MAJOR concern: the weather, ugh! Their birthday is at the end of January, so it's usually raining (keeping fingers crossed that it doesn't this year) or super cold. Either way, I'm sure we'll have a blast!

Thanksgiving: Preston Bailey Style!

I've spent the entire day trying to recover from the 4-day weekend. I had a wonderful Thanksgiving, shared with the people that matter to me most: my family! This was my first year cooking the Thanksgiving meal, and I have to say, I am very proud of myself because it came out great!

So, this morning, I was scoping out the blogosphere (one of my daily routines), and I came across a post on Preston Bailey's blog showcasing how he celebrated Thanksgiving with his family. I was impressed to say the least. This man truly does everything BIG! If you don't know who Preston Bailey is, I suggest you Google him ASAP. His work is absolutely phenomenal.

The Art of Negotiation

Want to get the most bang for your buck when it comes to choosing your wedding vendors? Below are five tips to help you negotiate the best possible prices and services:

1. Stick To Your Budget
Before meeting with any vendors, sit down and create a realistic budget for your wedding. Create a list of the different types of vendors you will be working with and the maximum amount you are able to spend on each service. Once you have the numbers in your head, it will be harder to lose sight of your ultimate goal. If a vendor offers packages, they may be willing to tweak it to fit your budget.

2. Do Your Homework
A good strategy for negotiating with vendors is to know what their competitors are charging for similar services. Get an itemized quote from each vendor you meet with, then make a comparison. Use this as leverage in your negotiation. If another vendor is offering more bang for your buck, point it out to your vendor of choice and see if it would be possible to throw in a few extra services or provide a discount to make up the difference.

3. Be Willing To Compromise
The are of negotiation is all about give and take. A vendor is more likely to oblige your request if you are willing to meet somewhere in the middle. Don't walk into an appointment with the mentality that you are going to get the vendor to lower their price or you'll walk away. Find a way to compromise. Perhaps your venue may extend a discount if you have your reception on a non-peak night (think weekdays, or maybe even an afternoon reception), or ask your photographer to throw in a few extra shots if you agree to use him/her for your engagement photos. Remember, negotiating is not about getting something for nothing. It's all about finding a happy medium.

4. Don't Be Afraid To Ask
Have you ever heard the term "closed mouths don't get fed"? Well, when it comes to negotiating, this statement couldn't be any more true. If you want something, simply ask. The worst that can happen is that you'll be told no, but usually it's a "No, but what I can do is..." More often than not, vendors are willing to be flexible...within reason. After all, there goal is to please you, the client. The bottom line is if you don't ask for what you want, you run the risk of not getting what you want.

5. Be Nice, But Firm
The right choice of words and tone of voice is the key to negotiating successfully. Always be polite when asking for a discount or upgrade, never give the impression that it is your way or the highway. It is a proven fact that most people respond favorably to kindness. But remember, don't let your kindness be mistaken for weakness. Be very clear and direct about what it is you are asking for, in the nicest way possible. Don't forget to smile!

Remember, the goal is not just to get a vendor to come down on their price, but to be sure you are getting the most value for your money. Never insult a vendor by demanding you get a certain price. You will be working with professionals who are experienced in their particular field, so they should be paid as such!

Trend Alert: Swag Tables

If you've been following along with the blog (which I hope you have!!!!!!), you will know I have an OBSESSION for dessert tables. I absolutely love how well they work with practically any type of occasion, from large events such as weddings, to smaller celebrations, like birthday parties.

I recently came across a post from one of my favorite blogs, Hostess with the Mostess, that mentioned a new popular trend: Swag Tables! Now, call me easily excitable, but I was swooning over this new concept. A "Swag Table" is set up as an alternative to the traditional party favor. Instead of picking ONE favor to send guests home with, you can create a buffet of favors, giving your guests several options to choose from (who doesn't like options???). You can also add an activity section to the table, where guests can make their own creations to take as a favor.

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of creating a dessert table for a Halloween party. I'm pretty pleased with how it all came together. There was no specific "theme", but I worked around the color scheme of orange, purple, and black: classic Halloween colors! Here are a few pics:

About Wish Upon a Wedding

Founded in January of 2010 by CA wedding planner, Liz Guthrie of San Jose Wedding Consultants, Wish Upon a Wedding was created to help couples who did not have the time, money, resources or strength to plan a wedding on their own, because of terminal illness or other serious life-altering circumstances. The organization now celebrates the courage, determination and spirit of these couples by granting their dream wedding wishes. It is their goal that chosen recipients can inspire other couples facing similar situations to find hope and strength, while raising awareness for terminal illness.

Growing up with a sister who was deaf since birth, and raised by parents who ran a board and care home for people facing numerous disabilities and life hardships, Liz learned early on to value the many blessings in life, and the importance of helping others. Volunteering throughout her life for a variety of nonprofit organizations, Liz was looking for a way to combine weddings and community service.

After producing the San Francisco Dream Wedding Giveaway in 2009, a contest in which onlyone couple would be granted a dream wedding, Liz came up with a way to merge her two passions. While going through the process of giving the wedding "prize" to a woman suffering from stage IV Hodgkin's Lymphoma, Liz created Wish Upon a Wedding. Overnight, Liz decided to change wedding history, and the way we give, by launching a nonprofit organization that was totally unique and had never existed before.

Supported by industry leaders such as Sasha Souza, David Beahm, Stella Inserra, Jenny Orsini, Kevin Covey, Stacie Francombe, SylviaWeinstock, Steve Kemble, Mindy Weiss, Mary Dann, and Ivy Robinson (to name just a few), the organization has experienced rapid growth and seen voracious acceptance throughout the country.

To date, eight couples have benefited from the generous work of Wish Upon a Wedding. Over 4,000 volunteers have signed up to become Wish Granters. Their facebook page has attracted over 10,000 fans. None of this would be possible without public support.

In Loving Memory of Wish Recipients who have Passed On

Dani and Tony married in St Louis on September 1. She passed away September 30th. Dani had suffered from Cystic Fibrosis since age 3, and had recently received a double lung transplant.

Florence and Micheal married near Sacramento on March 13. She passed away on September 28. Florence battled stage IV breast cancer, andwas diagnosed with six months to live at the time of her wedding.

Shelly and Jay married in Seattle on May 2. Shelly passed away three weeks later. She had been battling a rare type of cancerous lymphoma, and Jay suffered from Multiple Sclerosis.

A Fairy Tale Come True

With the Disney Fairy Tale Weddings by Alfred Angelo collection, brides can do just that! Wish Upon a Wedding is the world's first non-profit wedding wish granting organization for couples facing terminal illness and serious life-altering circumstances. The organization's focus is to bring joy to these couples by giving them the wedding of their dreams without thought to the challenges they are facing in life.

In it's first year, Wish Upon a Wedding (WUW) has managed to open more than a dozen chapters to serve Wish applicants. Wedding vendors across the US have generously sponsored products and services to the organization to help support this wonderful cause.

Yesterday, the organization posted a sad announcement on their national Facebook page: their first-ever wish recipient had succumbed to cancer. They also posted a link to the story of the couple's wedding. After reading the story, I was overcome with emotion. It was at that moment I realized the impact that this organization has made, and will continue to make, on many lives. It was also at that moment that I decided that I wanted to be a part of this amazing movement that is helping to celebrate more than just the union of two people, but is helping to celebrate LIFE.

As a wedding planner, I am fortunate to be a part of one of the most special days of a person's life: their wedding day. I can only imagine how much more special it is to a couple that has been burdened with terminal illness of a loved one. So, in saying all this, I have decide to apply to become a wish granter for Wish Upon a Wedding. It would be my pleasure to assist in any way possible to such a wonderful cause.

Let the Groom Have His Cake (and Eat It Too)!!!

Trying to figure out how to incorporate your groom's style into the wedding? Why not surprise him with a groom's cake!

The grooms cake has long been a tradition of the south and is becoming an increasingly popular trend in other parts of the country. It is usually given as a gift from the bride to the groom, and is the perfect way to showcase the groom's interests and hobbies. It is usually displayed next to the traditional wedding cake, then cut and boxed for guests to take home (makes an awesome wedding favor!).

Side note: As the story goes, single women are supposed to sleep with the slice of cake under their pillow so that they can dream of their future husband!

PTE Review: John's Incredible Pizza

We have a new feature on the Platinum Touch Events blog: Hot Spot Reviews! In the upcoming months, I will be checking out some of the hottest, most talked about places in LA and blogging all the fabulous (and not-so-fabulous) details to help make your planning experience THAT much more simple. From clubs, hotels, restaurants, etc., I will be checking them all out. The first Hot Spot that I had the pleasure to check out was John's Incredible Pizza. Nestled in the heart of Orange County (Buena Park), this little gem is located near some of the OC's most popular attractions, including Knott's Berry Farm, Medieval Times, MovieLand Wax Museum, etc. I had been hearing about this place all over the net, so I decided to grab my little ones and see what all the hype was about. I loved the family atmosphere of this place, and my daughters had a blast! Check out a few pics of our outing:

They won plenty of tickets to redeem for prizes at the end.

At the end of the day I had two happy two-year olds on my hands!

John's Incredible Pizza is a great alternative to the standard Chuck-E-Cheese party. Not only do they have great games, but they also have rides and bowling too! Their party packages are pretty reasonable, and I love the fact that they have separate party rooms that you can rent (not just a reserved table like most places).

If planning a HUGE party is not in the budget, but you would still like to show your children a good time on their next birthday, then consider John's Incredible Pizza!

On-Site Coordinator vs. Wedding Coordinator

As you begin your wedding planning journey, you are bound to run across a wide range of questions that you may have never considered. One question that is sure to arise if you're having your wedding/reception at a venue that provides an on-site coordinator is: "What's the difference between a venue's on-site coordinator and a wedding coordinator?" The simplest and short answer is: "An on-site coordinator works for the venue, while a wedding coordinator works for you!"

Since this is a first time experience for most brides and grooms, it would be a fair assumption that the venue's on-site coordinator will take care of everything related to the wedding. However, that is not the case. Now, don't get me wrong, I am NOT in any way bashing onsite coordinators or looking to take away from their overall importance. In fact, I think they are an excellent help in making sure everything goes smoothly on the big day. I just wanted to share the difference between the two roles so that there are no surprises if your venue coordinator says he/she will not, or cannot, perform a specific task for you.

An on-site coordinator will usually:

Provide a list of preferred vendors that have previously worked at the venue
Consult with you on food/beverage selections
Create a floor plan for your ceremony/reception
Detail your banquet event order
Act as the liason between you and your wedding vendors
Oversee ceremony/reception setup, food, etc. provided by the venue

A wedding coordinator's list of duties is far more extensive, and includes:

Working with you during all planning stages of the wedding planning process
Researching vendors that fit within your budget
Scheduling and attending vendor appointments
Negotiating contracts
Providing design and decor ideas
Assisting with questions regarding proper etiquette
Helping you stay within budget and creating a vendor payment schedule
Creating a detailed timeline of the day for you, your bridal party, and vendors
Confirming all vendors prior to the wedding day
Arriving early to ensure timely and proper setup
Providing an "emergency kit" in the case of unforeseen incidents
Overseeing the event through its finality

When planning an event as big and special as a wedding, it would be ideal to have both an on-site coordinator AND a wedding planner. The on-site coordinator is a wonderful asset to making sure all venue-related bases are covered, but make sure you have a wedding coordinator on your side to help make sure ALL bases are covered. When these two professionals work together, your chances of having a wonderfully orchestrated, stress-free event are doubled!

Don't Go It Alone: Hire a Wedding Planner!

The two largest purchases a person will probably make in their lifetime are a house and a car. In many cases, paying for a wedding rounds out the top three (sometimes even coming in at number two!). The average homebuyer will hire a real real estate agent to assist in the home buying process, while a person looking to buy a new car will seek the guidance of a car salesman. Why not also hire a skilled professional when it comes to planning your wedding? After all, this is the day most brides have dreamed of since they were little girls...and with so much money being spent on this special occasion, you wouldn't want to be so stressed from planning the wedding that you don't have time to enjoy it. Forget about the myth floating around that wedding planners are only for the wealthy. In this day and age, wedding planners are common and affordable to the everyday working-class professional. Not convinced? Well, here are just a few reasons why you shouldn't go it alone, and should consider hiring a wedding planner:

1. Peace of Mind - Planning a wedding can be a long and stressful process. There are so many decisions to be made and so many little details to be considered. With that being said, wouldn't you like to have peace of mind that everything has been taken care of, no stones are left unturned, and all you'll have to worry about is showing up, saying I do, and enjoying one of the most special days of your life? A wedding planner can give you just that. After all, your job is to be the bride, not the wedding planner!

2. Time - Did you know that the average wedding takes over 200 hours to plan?! Can you imagine researching vendors, scheduling appointments, doing follow-up phone calls, and keeping up with contracts all while handling you regular day-to-day obligations: work, school, family, etc? When would you find time to sleep?! An experienced wedding planner can save you countless hours by doing the legwork for you. They know the best venues and the perfect vendors that can make your special day everything you imagined it to be. Most likely, the planner has worked with the venue/vendor and can vouch for the quality of their service. Can you imagine how much time you'll save by not having to run around all over town trying to narrow down your choices?!

3. Savings - If you've never planned a wedding before, chances are you're unfamiliar with the going rate of many of the products and services you'll need to obtain for your wedding. A planner can help you avoid costly mistakes and shield you from the risk of being taken advantage of. Not to mention, most planners are skilled in the art of negotiation and will go to bat for you to get the best rates on services. Also, wedding planners often have access to deep discounts that are not always available to the general public. If a planner provides continuous business to a vendor, it is not uncommon for the vendor to show their appreciation in the form of discounts that can be passed onto their clients. In most cases, the wedding planner's fee more than pays for itself in terms of the amount of money you can save by hiring an experienced planner.

4. Problem Solving - Sure, you could ask a family member to be the go-to person on your big day, but think about it: your guests should be just that: guests! They are there to help celebrate your most joyous occasion. Don't they deserve to sit back and enjoy the festivities? Secondly, your wedding is one of the biggest investments you will make in your lifetime. Would you want to run the risk of a serious problem arising that will put a damper on the entire day? An experienced planner will be able to think on their toes and solve problems without your knowledge that there is even a problem. Knowledge and experience play a key role in solving last minute problems without panicking. Also, a good planner will come equipped with a "Bridal Emergency Kit" in the event an unforeseen problem arises.

5. Guidance - There is a big misconception that hiring a wedding planner means you'll lose all control of your wedding. That couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, it is a wedding planner's job to advise you of the best options available to you, then carry out your wishes. A good planner will be your go-to person for etiquette advice, wedding-related questions, and assistance with timelines. In fact, wedding planners often wear several hats throughout the planning process, acting as your counselor, financial advisor, middleman, mediator, therapist...the list goes on and on!

Hello I would love to win the boudoir picture session because I am currently trying to lose weight for my wedding and at times I find that my self esteem is low and it's not helping my weight loss progress. If I win this picture session I know that it will highly motivate me to want to lose weight so that I can look good in the pictures as well as for the wedding. I know that my fiance would also greatly appreciate the pictures because he is constantly reminding me of how beautiful he thinks I am, something I try to convince myself of as well. My fiance and I started dating in high school over 6 years ago, and well let's face it our bodies change significantly after high school something that I beat myself up about everyday. How did you get involved in the make-up/skincare industry? I began my career in 2002 teaching skin care and color cosmetics with Mary Kay. I took a break from the business while I was enrolled at Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (Los Angeles). After graduation, I re-launched my business with a renewed passion to enrich women’s lives by teaching skin care and advanced color application. I have always loved make up and helping women feel their best about having healthy beautiful skin. I believe that when a person feels better about how he or she looks on the outside it has a positive affect on how he or she feels about him or herself on the inside. I branched into the wedding industry because I love helping to create a bride’s Cinderella experience.

Do you have any formal training? I have attended many seminars/workshops specializing in color application and skin care techniques. I have been trained by the industries top professionals such as Robert Jones (Professional Make Up Artist) and Dr. Beth Lange (Chief Scientific Officer at Mary Kay).

What did you do prior to this? I was a student at University of Louisville majoring in Sociology (Go CARDS!) I also finished the Apparel Manufacturing Management program at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. Previously, I was a designer/stylist for elevee Custom Clothing – building custom wardrobes for NBA/NFL players and other celebrities.

How do you stay above the competition? I stay well educated by attending various seminars and workshops throughout the year. I study a wide range of products, the specific ingredients, and the proper use and application of these products. I study makeup trends, story boards, and application techniques. I take pride in interpreting these trends for effortless everyday beauty for today’s busy woman.

What would you say is your biggest source of inspiration? I am inspired by my family. I am blessed to have beautiful people (both inner beauty and outer beauty) who push and encourage me to pursue my dreams and to always strive to do my best.

What are a few ways that couples can save when it comes to make-up on their wedding day? Have an idea of what you want your make up to look like (clip pictures from magazines). Shop around for the best price/services/packages to get the best bang for your buck. Consult with a professional on the look you’d like to achieve. Just like you fit your wedding dress, you want to have a “fitting” with your makeup artist to make sure that he or she can achieve the look that you want prior to your big day.

Besides making the world beautiful one face at a time, what else keeps you occupied? I am super involved with working with teenagers...the Teen Church (The Preparation) we started last September at First AME Church. I am also involved in the Young Adult Ministry (The Journey). What’s the most valuable advice you would give to a couple in regards to choosing a make-up artist for their big day? 1 – Shop around for the best price/package/services. 2 – Have an idea in mind (supported by pictures) when meeting your potential artist. 3 – Make sure to have a “fitting” prior to your big day to reduce last minute surprises.

If you were not in the make-up/skincare business, what would you be doing instead? Ummmmmm…(blank stare), I guess if I had to choose I would be in fashion creating my own line and non-profit organization. There’s still plenty of time for that dream!

Danielle Keene created Bittersweet Treats, an online dessert company, to put a "modern twist on old-fashioned favorites". With an extensive background in the food service industry, it's not surprising that she has mastered the art of creating delicious treats that are just as visually pleasing to look at as they are yummy to eat! I had an opportunity to sit down with Danielle to learn more about her business and sample some of her most popular treats (love the perks of my job!), including my fave: red velvet cupcakes!!! How did you get involved in the dessert industry?

I always baked at home when I was a kid. I thought it was something I could see doing for the rest of my life and loving it. I went to culinary school and then started working in a professional kitchen in Los Angeles.

What did you do prior to this?

I have always been in the food service industry.

What makes a client choose Bittersweet Treats over the competition?

I think the way our product is designed and decorated is visually stunning, but number one I think is because of the way it tastes. The flavors are delicious and not overly sweet like most desserts.

What would you say is your biggest source of inspiration?

I like to look at art and textiles to get decorating ideas. I love to go to other cities to see what flavors are popular. And everything Martha Stewart does inspires me!

What are a few ways that couples can save when it comes to dessert options for the big day?

Purchasing a smaller decorated cake and the rest as sheet cake which per serving cost less. Or do a dessert bar and have mini desserts. The cost is less than a big cake and you will have a bigger variety for your guests.

Besides making delicious sweet treats, what else fills your time?

I love to eat out of course! Going to farmers markets, listening to music, I practice karate and enjoying out door exercise like bike riding and walking.

What’s the most valuable advice you would give to a couple in regards to choosing the cake/dessert for their wedding?

Don’t be afraid to go out of the norm and do something different than just a traditional cake. Having an ice cream or candy bar set up is so much fun for your guests and will leave them with a lasting memory.

If you were not in the dessert business, what would you be doing instead?

I would want to be a DJ in a club or with a band producing electronic music……..completely different from what I am doing now!

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to meet with photographer Karen Christensen, owner of The Legacy Boutique Photography Studio. I was so impressed by her work, and I learned a lot during our session as she schooled me on the difference between a "shoot & burn" photographer versus a professional (such as herself) who brings a lot more to the table. As I learned more about Karen, I was equally impressed by her mission and what she stands for. Not only is she an amazing photographer, but she is a strong advocate of women's and children's rights and devotes a lot of her time to working with non-profit and women-owned small businesses. Karen is also engaged to be married, so she can really relate to her clients and anticipate their needs when it comes to the desire to find a photographer who can capture the memories that will be cherished forever. How did you get involved with photography?

Photography is something that’s been a part of my world since I was fourteen, when I first got the bug to act and model for TV, FILM, and COMMERCIALS. But I really first devoted myself to shooting in 2004. That’s the year my best girlfriend, and then roommate, lost an 18month battle with Leukemia. I was pummeled by that loss. So after taking a long hard look in the mirror, and seeing an entertainment career of compromise staring back at me, I stopped auditioning to finish my BA in Photojournalism and Women’s Studies. That’s when I also really connected to the fragility of life, feeling as if Time was like water through my hands. Overnight, I found solace in using my power behind the lens to help change that. And so my photography studio www.thelegacyboutique.com, named for my friend in many ways, works to make my Art my Activism. Donating my time, talents, and a percentage of the studio’s proceeds to local and international organizations – my Art supports the improved self-esteem and self-sustainability of Women and Children in the U.S. and the Third World.

Do you have any formal training?

Yup! While my Photojournalism degree certainly trained me on the fundamentals of photography, the real training came when I became passionate about this art form, allowed myself to “play,” and surrounded myself with peers whose work inspired and humbled me. You know you’re in the right company if the people: A) completely floor you, B) secretly terrify you, and C) make you question your very worth as an Artist. Funny, but true! Maybe that’s selfish, but I’ll tell you it’s good business and it makes for wonderful community. It’s what you need to navigate finding your signature style, getting the phone to ring, and managing the complexities of running a successful studio.

What did you do prior to this?

I know, very personally, the pressures and the wonders of being in front of the lens. Before shooting professionally I was acting and modeling for roles in TV, FILM, and COMMERCIALS. My currency as an actor was never in my intelligence or life experience but rather in my looks, which is unfortunately true for many women in many professions. On set I would feel terribly outside of myself, unable to connect to the work, and highly aware of every minor imperfection on camera. But I truly believe, in life’s mysterious way, those awkward moments are what now gives me such empathy and rapport with my photography subjects. That’s what makes for authentic portraiture, beautiful from the inside out.

How would you describe your photography style?

I use Photojournalism to capture those “verb” actions moments, like the bride laughing by her great grandmother or the groom popping his shirt collar with a wink and a smile. And I use Fashion compositions for more stylized group shots, where we can add in artistic concepts like Antique lanterns spelling out the word “Love” in a corn field. Go all out creatively, you know?

What is your favorite moment to capture at a wedding?

My favorite moments to photograph are, well, all of them! But if I absolutely had to choose I would say the Engagement Session and the First Looks. Those are the times when it really and truly is about the couple themselves. Not the Dj who’s driving you crazy or the limo driver who’s late, just the bride and the groom connecting with each other and celebrating this new venture they’re embarking on for tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow. Brings me to tears every time! But I really can’t pick ONE so I have to also say the bridal party and couple formals with fun Fashion concepts!

What would you say is your biggest source of inspiration?

Time. I wrote in a letter on my website, “I’m haunted by Time.” And that’s really true. I think when you’ve managed a loss of any kind, for me it was the death of my friend in 2004, you become more and more acutely aware of the fragility of life. Whether it’s a morning snuggle with your partner or that point where tears turn to laughter – Life is lived in the little details. We can make big plans, we can chase fame and fortune, but ultimately it comes down to simple togetherness. And that “togetherness” can be fleeting. In many ways, everything I do now has come after the lessons I learned from losing my friend to Leukemia. The moments we shared are now lost, vanished and gone, but her legacy lives in me. Capturing legacies in Art is what inspires me.

What are a few ways couples can save when it comes to photography?

Aside from Photography, I am lucky enough to genuinely say I am in love with my life! From international exploration to local get-togethers, my fiancé and I are very blessed to live and love and laugh freely. Things we love: sunrise workouts in the park, cooking breakfast, beachside bike rides, local farmers markets, snuggling with my cat, riding motorbikes across Indonesia, sea kayaking in Thailand, sleeping in a Guatemalan jungle, climbing a Honduran volcano, ocean swimming beneath the Mayan Ruins in Mexico – to name only a few. My life is magical! Shooting and doing advocacy work is just icing on the cake. And I’m a girl who looooooves cake!

You’re planning your own wedding…what are some of the things you are looking for in a photographer?

Like I offer my clients, I’ll want Photojournalism and Fashion coverage in a combination of Color, Black & White, and Vintage tones. Most importantly I’ll want top quality custom Designer Heirloom Albums, Canvas Wraps, and Prints. Because what’s the sense in investing in excellent coverage and then not investing in a finished product that will stand the test of time, both artistically and archivally? That’s like paying to see only the Dress Rehearsal but not the final performance.

What’s the most valuable advice you’d give to a couple regarding choosing a wedding photographer?

1) Find a photographer who is willing to really spend their time getting to know you personally. You want your photographer to be your photographer for life.

2) Your dress, photography, and videography are your only Heirloom Keepsakes from your big day! Yes you want to invest in exceptional coverage, but you also want flawless Archival Art to showcase and hand down to your grandkids.

If you were not a photographer, what would you be doing instead?

This is a funny question because my fiancé and I romanticize about the countless other lives we’d love to live all simultaneously if we could! LOL. If I were not a photographer I would be living one of these other 5 lives I posted on my blog under, “In Another Life …” (http://www.thelegacyboutique.com/blog/?p=296). There I talked about also wanting to be: 1) An Investigative Reporter like Lisa Ling, 2) A Melancholic Singer/Songwriter like Rachel Yamagata, 3) A Respected Actress and UNICEF Ambassador like Audrey Hepburn, and 4) A Dancer like Martha Graham. Add to that: A Women’s Motivational Speaker, Business Consultant, Author like Anne Lamott or Alice Walker, Sculptor – and we may just have me covered! Clearly there’s no lack of inspiration or dreaming, just time.

If you could photograph a destination wedding anywhere in the world, where would it be?

I know I’m thrilled for the Cabo San Lucas Wedding I’m shooting for my new friends Jodi and Mike! But seeing as I can’t make up my mind if I want to get married in Goa, India or Bali, Indonesia or Cartagena, Colombia or Caan, France or Cairo, Egypt – it’s impossible to think where I wouldn’t want to photograph a Destination Wedding. It’s all too fun! Who knows? Maybe I’ll just leave my bags packed and wait for wherever the wind takes me!

Is there anything else you would like to share?
